Role & Company / Project Overview: We are hiring a Senior MS SQL Database Administrator (Job ID: VA-812167) to support the State of Virginia – VDOT's Tolling Engineering & Operations team. The ideal candidate will be an experienced SQL Server / Cloud DBA responsible for supporting production tolling environments, large-scale databases, performance optimization, and cloud database administration. Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties: • Manage, maintain, install, upgrade, patch, and migrate Microsoft SQL Server databases. • Perform advanced SQL Server tuning and performance optimization for very large databases (2TB+). • Execute SQL Server database upgrades, including SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2019 upgrades. • Diagnose deadlocks, blocking, Extended Events, Query Store, and wait statistics. • Utilize Query Tuning Assistant and Database Migration Assistant. • Maintain and manage SQL Server clustering, mirroring, and high availability architectures. • Develop and debug complex T-SQL code. • Work with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS components. • Administer and support environments involving Azure Cloud, Snowflake, and/or Databricks on Windows Server. Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience: • 6+ years of Microsoft SQL Server DBA experience. • 2+ years of E-ZPass Virginia Tolling SQL Server database upgrades. • Proven experience with SQL Server Tuning & Performance Optimization. • Hands-on experience upgrading SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2019. • Hands-on experience with Query Tuning Assistant and Database Migration Assistant. • Strong diagnostic experience with deadlocks, blocking, Extended Events, Query Store, and wait statistics. • Proven experience tuning Very Large Databases (2TB+). • In-depth expertise in SQL Server clustering, mirroring, and high availability. • Strong T-SQL coding and debugging capabilities. • Experience installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases. • Experience with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS. • Working knowledge/experience with Azure Cloud, Snowflake, and/or Databricks. • Strong background in Windows Server environments. • Highly Preferred: Experience supporting production tolling environments, large-scale SQL databases, performance optimization, and cloud database administration.
